This Year Roger Mallon Will Be The Entertainment At The Conservation Awards Banquet

Monday, March 19 at 6 PM

This year’s Berks County Conservation District (BCCD) and USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA)’s Annual Banquet will be held at the Pike Township Sportsman’s Club on March 19th, 2012 at 6pm. The Annual Banquet serves to recognize and honor individuals and organizations that have excelled in the fields of conservation, agriculture, and engineering. A family-style turkey and roast beef dinner will be served, and entertainment provided by Roger Mallon as Mark Twain. Tickets are for sale for the event for $18.00 per adult, and $8.00 for children under 12 years old. If you are interested in purchasing tickets, please contact Kelly Grube at the BCCD office 610-372-4657 x203.

Roger Mallon is, according to his website, “A seasoned radio and television performer and producer, host of Roger Mallon’s Fishin’ Kitchen TV program and co-host of A Great Day Outdoors radio and television shows.” He will be in character as Mark Twain for the evening’s entertainment.

Pike Township Sportsmen’s Association is located at 860 Hill Church Road in Oley. Directions from Route 73 S; 1.6 miles south of Oley turn left on Oysterdale Road. In a half of a mile, turn right onto Hill Church Rd. From S. on Route 73; turn right on Oysterdale Road, in half of a mile, turn right onto Hill Church Road.

Conservation District Scholarships

The Berks County Conservation District is currently accepting scholarship applications
from graduating High School seniors and Berks County College or University
students who will be continuing their education with the intent or continuance
of majoring in environmental science, forestry, agriculture, engineering or
related studies. The BCCD will award one $4,000 Scholarship, one $1,000 Scholarship,
one $1,000 Solon Phillips Memorial Scholarship, and one $500 Memorial Endowment
Scholarship for students who are currently or planning to be enrolled in a
post-high school institution for the fall of 2012.

You can download the full eligibility requirements and a copy of the BCCD scholarship
application here.

Students applying for scholarships will be required to submit the following:
Completed Application (including Statement of Career Plans, and Letters of
Recommendation)
A 500-word essay (topic found on the application)
Applicant’s Transcripts
Undergraduate institution proof of attendance or acceptance letter if available. If not
available at the time of scholarship package submission, letter must be
presented before a scholarship is awarded.

All completed applications shall be mailed to: Berks County Conservation District, 1238 County Welfare Road, Suite 200, Leesport, PA 19533

The deadline for submission is February 29, 2012. Interested applicants must have
their entire application into the BCCD office by this date. Scholarship
recipients will be notified by mail in mid-March 2012. Winners will be
recognized at the BCCD and Farm Service Agency Annual Banquet to be held at the
Pike Township Sportsmen’s Club on March 19, 2012.

New Manure Management Regulations

In October of 2011, the PA Department of Environmental Protection released new regulations for all farms of any size that produce or apply manure. These regulations require everyone to maintain records on manure and animal management on operation. The new regulations include horse farms, small farms that land apply manure, those that export their manure, and farms that pasture animals.

PAOneStop

Berks County Conservation District is also announcing that we have teamed up with PAOneStop in presenting a technical workshop on March 20th at 4 PM. PaOneStop is an online mapping resource that assists farmers in developing Conservation plans. It should be noted that the new Manure Management Manual requires a map as part of your Manure Management Plan. Attendees of the technical workshop will leave with a completed, written Manure Management Plan and maps of their farms.
